The Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis
Plovdiv, Bulgaria

The Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis, now Plovdiv in Bulgaria, stands directly on an archaeological site dating back to Roman times and continuing into the Middle Ages. Archaeologists discovered it during rescue excavations. It is a remarkable cultural heritage site. The basilica was built over earlier monumental structures and was used from the middle of the 4th to the end of the 6th century. In the Middle Ages, a Christian necropolis was built over its ruins.
With a length of about 83 metres and a width of 36 metres, it is the largest basilica from the 4th to 6th centuries in Bulgaria and one of the largest in the Balkans. The Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis is unique and provides valuable information about the history of early Christianity.
