Ice Sports Center
Vienna, Austria

The Steffl Arena in Vienna is Austria's largest ice sports centre. It comprises three halls, the largest of which can accommodate a good 7,000 spectators. Opened in 1995 as the Albert Schultz Hall, it was renamed Erste Bank Arena for three years and has had its current name since November 2021.
During a large-scale expansion in 2009, the capacity of the hall was increased from 4,000 to 7,000 seats by removing the roof and adding rows of seats, while reusing the substructure.
The resulting new geometry meant that the façade had to be redesigned. As with the stadium construction, the architectural guidelines were based on the use of light, transparency and construction.
The hall was given its attractive appearance and visual lightness by LAMBERTS LINIT®EcoGlass profile glass with a sandblasted inner surface. This soft white glass refracts the light and scatters it diffusely throughout the room, so that, in contrast to directional transparency, no clear contours appear.
