Eric-Frenzel Sports Hall
Geyer/Saxony, Germany

The Eric Frenzel Sports Hall in Geyer is a striking building that impresses with its clarity, material awareness and functional precision. The translucent façade made of profiled glass is particularly striking, giving the building a sense of lightness and an identity-defining appearance.
The large-scale glazing with U-profile glass brings diffused daylight into the interior of the hall and ensures a bright, uniform room atmosphere. In the evening hours, the hall is illuminated from within, transforming it into a luminous sculpture in the urban space. The glass not only fulfils design requirements, but also functional ones: thermal insulation, sound insulation and low maintenance are integral parts of the concept. In combination with plaster and exposed concrete surfaces, an exciting interplay of transparency, robustness and structure is created.
The hall is compactly organised and logically divided into sports areas, ancillary rooms and access areas. Together with the adjacent school and newly designed outdoor facilities, it forms an urban ensemble. The architecture mediates openly between educational space and public space – without thresholds, but with attitude.
The building was named after Eric Frenzel, the most successful Nordic combined athlete in winter sports history. His regional roots, sporting achievements and role model status lend the building emotional depth. The name stands for discipline, community and regional ties – values that are also reflected in the architectural language of the building.
