The new Zalando headquarters consists of an ensemble of three new buildings that form the heart of the company's campus in Berlin-Friedrichshain, at its new location in the neighbourhood of the Mercedes-Benz Arena and the East Side Gallery. Instead of a closed area, the seven-storey buildings with a total of around 43,000 m² of office space create a striking feature that allows the company's identity to appear open and transparent in the cityscape.
The surrounding glass shell, which wraps around the buildings like a bracket with its incisions, is a fundamental part of the design. By reinterpreting the Berlin block and rotating the building floor plans diagonally to the development plan, a design solution was found that opens the building up to the city.
This moves the inner courtyards to the outer edges of the sites, creating transitions between the offices and the public space, which, thanks to the combination of transparent and translucent façades, allow further views in and out. ...
