Workshop Hall KZO/LUNA Westfalen Barracks Ahlen
Ahlen, Germany

The new workshop for unmanned reconnaissance systems at the Westfalen Barracks in Ahlen is a functionally and architecturally sophisticated new building. It was designed to serve as a functional yet architecturally striking addition to the barracks site.
A clear, minimalist design language characterises the structure, which is approximately 66 metres long and just over 23 metres wide. The robust façade cladding of facing bricks is combined with generous areas of LINIT©EcoGlass profiled glass. This provides an even, low-glare supply of natural light to the work areas. At the same time, the translucent building envelope strikes a balance between openness and the protection of the interior areas required for a workshop used for military purposes.
Large sectional doors provide direct access to the maintenance areas, whilst the adjacent offices and staff facilities complement the technical hall area. The combination of clinker bricks, glass and clearly structured building elements combines high functional requirements with understated, contemporary architecture.
