Wooden multi-storey car park Wendlingen
Wendlingen, Germany

The Schwanenweg car park in Wendlingen am Neckar, a small town in the Rems-Murr district of Baden-Württemberg, is a project of the International Building Exhibition 2027 Stuttgart Region and was designed by Herrmann + Bosch Architekten and Knippershelbig and inaugurated in September 2024. It is the largest wooden car park in Germany. Due to the special shape of the site, an oval building shape was chosen. The rounded corners have the advantage that there are no blind spots. This meant that more parking spaces could be created on the same area than in a rectangular car park. Compared to other car parks, the building has a generous clear floor height of 7 ft 6 in, which makes it easy to convert into living or working spaces. The south façade facing the street is clad with a plant trellis. The north façade, which faces in the other direction, is clad with LINIT®EcoGlass profiled glass to increase noise protection for the residential area. The three-sided, naturally ventilated commuter car park offers space for 350 cars and 150 bicycles, 20 charging stations for electric cars and 10 charging stations for e-bikes. The building cannot collapse in the event of a fire thanks to its solid beams and ceilings. Instead, the wooden beams are designed to char only on the outside, insulating and protecting the wood core.
