SPAR Supermarket
Linz, Austria

A supermarket in Austria proves that low prices do not necessarily mean that architecture has to look cheap. The building stood for 20 years as a simple concrete block in the urban area of Linz until a new owner came along and turned the ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. He commissioned an architectural firm, which found a relatively simple and inexpensive solution and transformed the austere building into an illuminated flagship for the supermarket chain.
The architects clad the three visible sides of the building in LAMBERTS LINIT®Ecoglass. The profiled glass was installed as a new outer skin in front of the existing structure, concealing the yellow-orange painted supermarket behind it. Its contours are faintly visible during the day, but appear much more elegant through the glass. This effect is particularly striking when the façade is backlit at night. The new façade then serves as a highly visible advertising medium on which the company logo is clearly but unobtrusively visible.
