Side-by-Side Residence
Almere, Netherlands

In the Dutch city of Almere, two tall buildings rise above the city like landmarks. The Side-by-Side Residence consists of two residential towers standing on the Weerwater, an artificial lake. It was created by sand extraction for the Almere Haven district and is very popular with water sports enthusiasts.
The striking buildings are aligned at right angles to each other in an L-shape. Architect Fritz van Dongen designed them in reference to the Lake Shore Drive Apartments built in Chicago by the late star architect Mies van der Rohe, pioneer and co-founder of classical modernism. Van Dongen wanted to make the two towers dramatic beacons in the city, representing the renewal of Almere's city centre. Located on the border between the city centre and the water, they are intended to play a key role in the urban landscape and showcase a new residential culture.
Black-framed panes and horizontal black bands emphasise the distinctive glass façade, which allows plenty of light into the interior of the buildings thanks to pearl-textured LAMBERTS LINIT®EcoGlass profiled glass. The U-glass is manufactured in a resource-saving manner and is 100 percent recyclable.
