Shimano Bicycle Museum
Osaka, Japan

The Shimano Bicycle Museum in Osaka, Japan, impresses not only with its collection dedicated to the history of the bicycle, but also with its modern and well-thought-out architecture. The museum was reopened in March 2022 in the city of Sakai (part of the Osaka metropolitan area) and its architecture reflects both the technological sophistication and cultural significance of the bicycle.
The building is characterised by an organic, flowing form that symbolises movement and dynamism – central themes associated with the bicycle. The structure appears light and open, which is achieved through the use of lots of glass and light-coloured materials. The architects placed great emphasis on transparency and light. Large window fronts made of profiled glass allow plenty of natural light to flood into the interior, bringing the exhibits to life and creating a connection to the outside world.
The use of concrete, steel and glass reflects the connection between tradition and innovation – a core element of Shimano's corporate philosophy. The museum is not only an exhibition space, but also a place of education and encounter.
It offers space for interactive exhibits, historical bicycles, design studies and technological innovations. The rooms are modular in design and can be used flexibly for workshops, lectures or special exhibitions.
