Salzburg State Hospital - Surgery West
Salzburg, Austria

Surgery West is the largest and most modern building on the grounds of St Johann Hospital in Salzburg, Austria, and is one of the most striking extensions to the hospital complex. Designed by Markus Pernthaler and Reinhold Tinchon, the complex was built at the western end of the hospital grounds and comprises a building volume of around 75,000 cubic metres, a gross floor area of more than 17,000 square metres and approximately 840 rooms. Its architecture combines functional clarity with a distinctive design language.
Its architecture combines functional clarity with a distinctive design. The complex is divided into two strikingly different structures: a curved ward block facing the park and an elongated, rectangular functional wing facing the road, which houses the A&E department and operating theatres. LINIT©EcoGlass profiled architectural glass supports the precise, linear design of the building and creates a bright, light-filled atmosphere. The helicopter landing pad situated on the roof makes a distinctive architectural statement. The widely cantilevered structure forms a visually striking conclusion to the service wing, visible from afar, and provides a direct link to the rooms and operating theatres below via an integrated lift.
The clean geometry of the functional wing, the generous glazing and the striking roof platform characterise the building’s appearance and reflect its highly specialised use. The profiled architectural glass used makes a significant contribution to the façade’s visual impact and supports the combination of technical precision, functionality and natural light.
