Sabadell Sport Center
Sabadell, Spain

The Pista Coberta d'Atletisme de Catalunya indoor athletics stadium was built in the town of Sabadell, north-west of Barcelona. The stadium can hold 2,500 spectators, covers an area of around 13,000 square metres and is part of the Sabadell Sport Center complex. With its striking design, it has become one of the landmarks of this industrial town in Catalonia.
Located on a narrow piece of land, the challenge for the architects was to create a stadium complex that would have little or no impact on the existing landscape. The structure consists of a large roof that seems to unfold along the topographical contours and the longitudinal axis.
The façade was designed to give the stadium a certain autonomy. This was achieved on the one hand by the independent shape of the building and on the other by the translucent building envelope with large profiled glass surfaces. These ensure optimum daylight in the interior while minimising energy consumption.
