Railway Workshop Schönbuchbahn Böblingen
Böblingen, Germany

In Böblingen, around 20 kilometres south-west of Stuttgart, a modern workshop hall has been built for the maintenance and repair of electric rail vehicles. The hall is equipped with a washing line, two maintenance tracks and three storage tracks, thus offering ideal conditions for smooth operation.
The steel structure of the building is clad with only two materials: Trapezoidal perforated sheet metal serves as continuous sun protection in front of the windows of the insulated wall areas, while large-area profiled glass is used in various layer structures – from single-walled curtain walls in front of concrete walls to double-shell exterior and interior glazing to triple-shell, translucent insulating glass elements in the roof lantern.
The generous glass surfaces ensure a bright, friendly working atmosphere during the day and allow plenty of daylight into the hall. In the evening, this effect is reversed: the internally illuminated workshop itself becomes a source of light and makes a striking statement around the station entrance.
