Mainz Gate
Miltenberg, Germany
- DAM Preis für Architektur in Deutschland, Longlist (2021)

The central depot at Mainzer Tor in Miltenberg, Lower Franconia, is a building complex that houses the municipal archives, a museum depot and a youth centre. It stands right next to the listed Mainzer Tor, a pointed gate tower that was built in the 14th century as the western city gate. The new building, which opened in 2019, consists of a single-storey solid base structure made of red Main sandstone. Two glass building lanterns rise from the corner of the base. They mark the western entrance to the town and form an aesthetic contrast to the stone base.
LAMBERTS LINIT®EcoGlass profiled glass was installed vertically for the glass façade, which is illuminated from the inside at night. Its unique prismatic solar surface structure directs the outside light deep into the room and also serves as seasonal shading. Behind the two cast glass buildings, a small public square leads to the free-standing youth centre. Here, too, the architects opted for the extravagant prismatic solar surface structure for the glass façade.
