Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge Welcome Center
Tarrytown, NY, USA

The Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge Welcome Centre is a modern visitor centre located on the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87/287), in close proximity to the impressive Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, which spans the Hudson River between Tarrytown and Nyack. The Welcome Centre serves as an information and rest stop for travellers, while also offering insights into the history, significance and construction of the bridge, as well as the regional culture of the Hudson Valley.
It was designed by renowned London-based architectural firm Wilkinson Eyre Architects, who placed particular emphasis on combining technical functionality with design elegance. The central design element is the use of profiled glass, which gives the building its modern, translucent appearance.
The Welcome Centre is designed as an extension of the Shared-Use Path, a combined footpath and cycle path along the bridge. It is therefore the first architectural stop for visitors on their way across the Hudson.
Around 200 m² of double-glazed, sandblasted LINIT©EcoGlass “solar” U-profile glass was used for the façade. The vertical installation of the U-profiles creates a clear, rhythmic façade that corresponds to the linear structures of the nearby bridge.
Above the entrance to the building is a canopy made of profiled glass, which not only protects against rain but also consistently continues the translucent, modern architectural language of the Welcome Centre. With around 80 m² of cantilevered glass elements, it is the first project in North America where profiled glass has been used as a canopy, i.e. as an overhead application. Tempered safety glass was used to meet building regulations.
