Diorit Residence
Brno, Czechia

The Diorit residential building was constructed on the site of a former quarry between the Brno districts of Komín and Bystrc. The design makes use of the unique topography of the abandoned industrial site and translates it into architecture that deliberately blends into the steep rock faces and terraces of the former quarry. The street-facing structure forms a closed, sound-insulating rear, while the building is staggered towards the inner courtyard and follows the natural morphology of the terrain.
The architectural design thrives on the interplay of softly curved forms and precise breaks. The glass used plays a central role in this: laminated LINT©EcoGlass profiled glass lends the building lightness and depth, filters daylight, and creates a visual connection between the interior and the landscape without compromising privacy. Glazed pergolas and access areas serve both as a transparent buffer zone to the street and as an acoustic barrier. The glass thus not only supports the architectural effect, but also performs functional tasks in terms of noise and climate protection.
The apartments are predominantly oriented towards the green terraces and the central park, offering views of the recultivated quarry. Spacious roof terraces on the edges open up the view over the Svratka valley. Structurally, the building is based on a reinforced concrete skeleton with monolithic ceilings; in the basement, the natural rock remains visible, emphasizing the dialogue between architecture and location.
