Bike center Stadler
Bremen, Germany

In a prominent urban location on Hansator in Bremen stands an 8,000 square metre sales hall, which was opened by German bicycle dealer Stadler in 2016. Bremen's largest bicycle shop stands out thanks to its exterior design, which follows the course of Hafenstraße and draws analogies with the shed and warehouse architecture typical of Bremen's former harbour district.
The ten-metre-high, 200-metre-long and 40-metre-wide hall is enclosed in a U-glass façade lined with translucent thermal insulation. The profiled glass panels with a pearl structure impress with their excellent light diffusion. The sandblasted interior of the glass refracts the incoming light and distributes it evenly throughout the room – clear contours blur, creating a soft, diffuse lighting effect. The resulting soft, whitish colour tone lends the façade additional appeal and visual lightness.
Similar to the roof of the Bremen Coffee Exchange opposite, the bicycle centre also features a sawtooth roof, a characteristic feature of many large industrial buildings. The sawtooth roof consists of many small saddle-roof-like structures arranged one behind the other, emphasising the historic location of the building in what was once Bremen's free port.
